George Michael grew up in North London, and began his musical career by forming a Ska band with friends, among them Andrew Ridgeley. The two went on to form Wham! and their destinies were set to take a turn for the fortunate. Wham! formed in 1981. George assumed the band's musical roles while Ridgeley became the Wham! public image and spokesperson. Ridgeley's ability to divine what the Great British public wanted led him to effect a major image change for the twosome; their first hit "Bad Boys" differed little in its sound from the later "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", but image was everything and Wham! hit the big time as good-time guys who lived life to the full.
